A family-run facility in the village of Chlistov, about 12 km from Klatovy, in the foothills of the Šumava mountains. The retreat takes place in a windowless room in a converted stone house with a garden. The room is soundproofed by 90 cm thick walls, has its own bathroom, radiant heating and forced ventilation, and is separated by a corridor that is also completely dark.
The approach is strongly spiritual, with references to Jungian psychology and the Tibetan tradition; the website treats the retreat as demanding inner work and discourages those who are only looking for an experience. Contact during the darkness is minimal: vegetarian food is placed outside the door once every 24 hours and the main conversation with the guides takes place only after the retreat ends. The standard length is a week, retreats of 4 to 49 days are possible, and transport from Klatovy and back is included. Leaving early: nothing is refunded, not even a pro rata share.
If the operator ends the retreat, a pro rata share is refunded.
Health restrictions
18+ only.
Not suitable for people under the care of a psychiatrist or psychologist, with a mental illness or a phobia of darkness or enclosed spaces.
Not suitable for people with a current or past dependence on psychotropic substances or alcohol; according to the website, also not for those who have taken antidepressants in the past.
According to the website, darkness will not provide a solution for people after severe burnout.
Other conditions
A declaration of honour is signed at the intake interview.
Smoking is prohibited during the retreat.
Guests are not locked in and can lock themselves in; communication verbally or by notes.
Bring: comfortable clothes, socks, toiletries, regular medication, a small torch, a notepad and writing materials.
